Most law firm websites are optimised for the firm's name, not for the moment someone urgently needs a solicitor. Here's how local SEO, practice-area pages and Google Business Profile work together to fix that.

Most people do not search for a solicitor by name. They search for the problem they have, usually with a location attached: "family solicitor near me", "conveyancing solicitor Manchester", "employment tribunal advice". If your website only ranks for your firm's name, you are invisible at the exact moment a new client is looking.

This playbook is based on the work we have done for law firms in the UK and the UAE, including the projects described in our legal sector case study.

Start with Google Business Profile

For local searches, the map results often appear above the normal listings. Your Google Business Profile is what decides whether you show up there.

  • Use your exact registered firm name, address and phone number, the same everywhere online
  • Choose the most specific primary category, such as "Family law attorney" or "Solicitor"
  • Add every office as its own verified location
  • Ask satisfied clients for reviews and reply to every one professionally

Build one page per practice area, per location

A single "Our Services" page cannot rank for divorce, wills, immigration and personal injury at the same time. Each practice area needs its own page that answers the questions clients actually ask: what the process looks like, how long it takes, what it costs, and what to bring to the first meeting.

If you have offices in more than one town, create location pages that are genuinely local, with the office address, the team who works there and the courts or registries you deal with. Copying the same text and swapping the town name does not work.

Write for the worried reader, not the search engine

Legal searches are emotional. A person looking for a criminal defence solicitor at 11pm wants reassurance and a clear next step. Short paragraphs, plain English, a visible phone number and an obvious way to book a consultation convert far better than dense legal prose.

Every practice-area page should answer three questions within the first screen: can you help with my problem, what happens next, and how do I contact you right now?

Earn trust signals Google can see

  • SRA number and regulatory information in the footer
  • Named solicitor profiles with qualifications and admission dates
  • Accreditations such as Lexcel or Law Society panels, where you hold them
  • Client reviews from independent platforms

Fix the technical basics

Slow, broken or insecure websites lose rankings and clients. Make sure the site loads quickly on mobile, uses HTTPS, has a clean URL structure and an up-to-date XML sitemap. Add structured data for your firm (LegalService or LocalBusiness) so search engines understand who you are and where you operate.

Measure enquiries, not just traffic

Rankings are only useful if they bring in clients. Track calls, form submissions and booked consultations by practice area, and review them monthly. That tells you which pages deserve more investment and which keywords are not worth chasing.

How long does law firm SEO take?

Google Business Profile improvements can show results within weeks. Practice-area pages and content usually take three to six months to build meaningful rankings, depending on how competitive your area and practice are. SEO is a compounding investment: the pages you build this year keep bringing enquiries next year.

Frequently asked questions

What is the most important SEO step for a UK law firm?

A complete, verified Google Business Profile with consistent contact details and genuine reviews, followed by a dedicated page for each practice area.

How long does SEO take for solicitors?

Local map improvements can appear within weeks, while practice-area rankings typically take three to six months depending on competition.

Do solicitors need a separate page for each service?

Yes. Each practice area should have its own page so it can rank for the specific searches clients make, such as conveyancing or employment law.
